Overview

Our Toxic Times (OTT) started publication in July of 1990 when the Chemical Injury Information Network (CIIN) had 37 members. The intention was to provide moral support and information for chemically sensitive, chemically injured, and chemically aware people in Montana , but very quickly that modest plan was overwhelmed. CIIN has grown to over 3,000 members all across the United States and in numerous foreign countries. Because of all the confusion and misinformation about chemically induced health problems, CIIN and OTT have tried to remain grounded in only the most mainstream of research and services, and that approach has led to a growing and well respected organization. We hope our readership will appeal to you as a source of clients and customers and that you will grow along with us.

Advertising Policy

Our Toxic Times is a conservative publication and reserves the right to reject any advertising which it believes does not fit its conservative position. We do not allow advertisements of treatments or cures for MCS.

AD Closing Date

The deadline for advertising is the 13th of each month to insure getting into the next issue. Ads received after the deadline may or may not get in the next month’s issue.

Ad Rates

Advance payment is required before ads will be run.

A.…CIIN sells advertising in Our Toxic Times by the space, not by the word.

B.…The standard rate for advertising in OTT is $13.00 per "column inch." (A column-inch is a space 1 column wide by 1 inch tall. For example, an ad that is 2 columns wide by 3 inches tall would be 6 column-inches. See Ad Specifications below regarding column sizes.)

C.…A 10% discount may be taken when paying for three (3) or more ads at a time. There is no refund for unused ads.

D.…For housing ads (which generally appear on the back cover) there is a special rate:
1 column wide, 1 inch tall, $11.00. Housing ads of any other size take the standard ad rate. A one inch ad can hold up to about 30 words without crowding.

AD SPECIFICATIONS

Electronic Ads Preferred, Camera Ready hard copies also okay

1.…Electronic versions can be sent by e-mail or disk. Please call to discuss format if other than JPEG, TIFF, or PDF (Acrobat).

2.…Photographs and half-tone graphics must be screened either by you, or by us at an extra cost of $15.00 each. They should be screened at a maximum of about 85 lines.

3.…OTT uses a 3-column format on a letter-size page: A 1-column ad should be just under 2.4" wide, a 2-column ad must be no more than 5" wide, and a 3-column ad may be up to 7.55" wide. No ad should be over 9.25" tall.

4.…Hard copies are best in black and white. Good contrast color will usually work, except that blues might be a problem to reproduce. For best results, ads should be printed on a 24 lb., printer-specific paper.

5.…We can provide help building ads, as time allows, but ads arriving after the deadline must be camera-ready to have any chance of being included in the upcoming issue.

Sizes, Prices, & Miscellaneous Information
For advertising in Our Toxic Times

FOR BEST RESULTS … electronic versions should be saved at high resolution or high quality, and hard copy versions should be printed on 24-lb. paper formulated for your type of printer (e.g., inkjet paper for inkjet printers, laser paper for laser printers), and do not fold or crease the ad in mailing.

STANDARD RATE = $13.00 per "column inch" [1" tall X 2.4" wide]

FULL PAGE = [27.75 "column inches"] = $360.00
9.25" tall (maximum) x 3 cols. wide (7.5" maximum)

1/2 PAGE = [14 "column inches"] = $182.00
4.625" tall x 3 cols. wide (7.5" maximum)
OR 7" tall x 2 cols. wide (5")

1/3 PAGE = [9.25 "column inches"] = $120.25
3.125" tall x 3 cols. wide (7.5" maximum)
OR 4.625" tall x 2 cols. wide (5")
OR 9.25" tall Max. x 1 col. wide (2.4")

1/4 PAGE = [7 "column inches"] =$91.00
2.375" tall x 3 cols. wide (7.5" maximum)
OR 3.5" tall x 2 cols. wide (5")
OR 7" tall x 1 col. wide (2.4")

ADS MAY BE other sizes, of course: 1, 2, or 3 columns wide, and any height from 1” up to 9.25" — in increments of at least 1/4 inch, please.

PLEASE AVOID ads taller than 8" but less than 9" tall.

BECAUSE FOREIGN MEMBERS of CIIN cannot use our toll-free 800 numbers, they often ask to see addresses, fax numbers, regular phone numbers, websites, or e-mail addresses in ads. It is easier and cheaper for them to contact advertisers that way.

ADVANCE payment is required.

DISCOUNT of 10% is available for pre-payment of three (3) or more ads at a time. There is no refund for unused ads.

CLOSING DATE for ads is the 13th of each month. If arrangements have been made to run an ad by the 13th to run an ad, there are usually a couple of additional days to get the ad in our hands.

Circulation Information

Our readership is mostly made up of victims of chemical sensitivity or injury and their families, but it also includes many doctors, lawyers, researchers, and government representatives. It usually takes the Post Office until the third week of the month to deliver to all our members. It is common for each issue of Our Toxic Times to be passed from person to person, remaining in circulation for many months.

Members receive "Our Toxic Times," the monthly magazine published by CIIN since July of 1990.

RL award

Cindy Duehring (1962-1999), former CIIN Vice-President and editor of Medical & Legal Briefs, was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 1997. This award is considered to be the alternative Nobel Prize.
