CIIN Treatment Survey

Statement to Potential Participants

The Chemical Injury Information Network is conducting an on-going survey on the usefulness of treatments used by those with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). The survey was designed cooperatively by Dr. Pam Reed Gibson and Cynthia Wilson, and was originally developed for the 2001 MCS Conference in Santa Fe, NM. (The results of the original survey are available from CIIN for $7 Order No. 0112-GIBS-01-024.)

If you have MCS, you are invited to participate in the survey and help CIIN gather data that may help others who suffer from the condition. The survey can be downloaded below.

CIIN is interested in treatments that have actually improved your MCS not one that simply reduced a symptom temporarily. For example, if you get a headache from a chemical and take pain medicine to cope with the pain, the pain medicine is a palliative treatment, but it does not cure or improve your MCS, because you will get another headache the next time you encounter that chemical. So, unless otherwise specified, please answer the questions in terms of whether or not the treatment has actually improved your MCS. A few questions ask about the use of filters and masks to prevent exposures. We know that filters do not cure MCS, but we are interested in whether people feel that they reduce exposures.

The risks of participating are minimal. Some discomfort may result from thinking about your disability in order to answer questions. However, no other negative effects are expected to result from participating in this research. The benefits of this research include the possibility of informing persons with MCS about the effects of various treatments.

Your participation is confidential as your name will not be associated with your data, and all surveys will be destroyed once the information is entered.

This on-going survey will be posted on CIIN’s web site as well as available in a hardcopy format. The survey results will be updated with every 100 participants. If you decide to participate, please complete the survey and return it to: The Chemical Injury Information Network at PO Box 301, White Sulphur Springs, MT 59645. Your participation is greatly appreciated and may help others to make wiser treatment choices.
